Farming Project: Families In Abject Poverty (FIAP) Project!
Love Your Neighbor Rescue Mission International, Inc. (LYNRMII) rescues families that are afflicted by hunger and starvation. Our nonprofit organization is seeking a grant to maintain and expand the plantain and palm plantation farming that is already established. This initiative will fight the hunger and starvation in our Families In Abject Poverty (FIAP)! Project with the objective to empower and create farming opportunities for all families in abject poverty that are rescued by Love Your Neighbor Rescue Mission.
Annual Funding in the amount of $87,302.00 is requested for plantain suckers, farming equipment such as hoes, shovels, wheelbarrows, and cutlasses; labor, fertilizers, bulldozing of roads leading to and around farm settlement; building of farm huts, boreholes for water supply, transportations of plantain suckers and palm seedlings to farm settlements, and transportation of plantains during harvest season; and solar electricity as light source for the farm settlement.
Statement of Need
Love Your Neighbor Rescue Mission International currently rescues families in abject poverty who engage in plantain plantation farming to feed their families and help to educate their children who could not be placed in schools because education is not a priority in these poor families. According to research, if these families are not given the opportunity to till the ground for their source of food, they will die of hunger or hunger-related illnesses.
Program Description
Our FIAP! Project provides families in abject poverty the opportunity to learn a trade (farming). Each rescued family is given three to six plots of land (1/2 to 1 acre) depending on their capabilities. Because these families lack the necessities of life (including food). LYNRMII provides the initial capital funds needed as “seed money” to start up the farming process. This includes the leasing of the land, feeding and payment of laborers, purchase of equipment, crops, fertilizers, building of huts for the farmers to dwell in, bulldozing of the roads leading into the farm settlement, and transportation of goods. During harvest, LYNRMII will be involved in harvesting and marketing of plantains on a larger scale. As harvest is plenty, this in turn will eradicate hunger, promote good self-esteem/independence, and the farmers will feel a sense of belonging to the society because of their contributions of food to the community (empowerment). Also, at the end of the first round of harvest and marketing, the rescued farmers will continue their own independent farming or start up a small-scale business to continue to sustain their families. In addition, LYNRMII will continue to maintain and expand the plantain plantation and rescue more new families in abject poverty; and the cycle will continue year after year until we have a vast community that is hunger free.
PURPOSE FOR THE FARMING PROJECT
-
To provide a future financial means of sustaining the day-to-day operation of the organization in Nigeria
-
To provide food supply for those families that LYNRMII rescue
-
To provide a source of employment and income on a low scale to the poor families that we rescue. This will promote their independence and autonomy as they gradually enter the workforce.
Goals and Objectives
The goal of the FIAP! Project is to give these poor families the chance to be directly involved in producing their daily food requirements by placing them in a farm settlement setting. Thereby creating the atmosphere for the farmers to connect with nature and the fruits of their labors.
The main objectives include:
1. Monitor and measure at intervals the increase in the plantain produce.
2. Providing the crops, instruments, and initial laborers needed to consistently increase the plantain produce.
3. Monitor closely the efficiency of laborers to avoid lazy attitudes that will lead to poor productivity.
4. Monitoring closely the progress of the small-scale businesses that are established for sub-sessions of families who chose this route after initial harvest. Thus, through this avenue these poor families can make meaningful contributions to their children’s education as their businesses grow with adequate profits.
